Homburg donation largest in Confederation Centre of the Arts history
Richard Homburg, Chairman & CEO of Homburg Invest Inc., on July 16th, 2009,
announced a $2 million dollar donation to the Confederation Centre of the
Arts.
The Confederation Centre of the Arts is the only national memorial to the
Fathers of Confederation. The Centre opened in 1964, the centennial year of the
Charlottetown Conference where our founders gathered in Charlottetown to discuss
a union. Located in the heart of historic Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island,
the Confederation Centre of the Arts covers an entire city block and consists of
theatres, galleries, a public library, restaurant and gift shop. With a mandate
to inspire Canadians to celebrate, through heritage and the arts, the
origins and evolution of Canada as a nation, the Centre is alive today with
the best of Canadian theatre, music, dance, literature, design and visual arts.
Speaking at a special reception before the National Board of Trustees of the
Fathers of Confederation Buildings Trust, Mr. Homburg said, “The Confederation
Centre of the Arts is the economic and cultural cornerstone of Prince Edward
Island. I am a big believer in P.E.I. as a destination, and the Confederation
Centre as a multidisciplinary cultural centre of Atlantic Canada. I want to help
make it the cultural centre of Canada.”
The donation contains two components: 1$ million for the completion of the
underground pedway between the Centre and the Shops of Confederation Court Mall;
and a $1 million gift to the Centre for the refurbishing Mainstage theatre. With
this donation, the Mainstage will be renamed Homburg Theatre.
